アンガウル知事選挙と230人の好ましくない人物

ニュージーランドのジャーナリストMichael Fieldが短いメモを書いていた。アンガウル知事選と今年４月に発行されたパラオ滞在の好ましくない外国人の230人のリストの関係だ。202人が中国人である。

2017年には前大統領れメンゲサウが公表した14名のリストがある。5年で14人から230人。これが意味するものは？

そしてフィールド記者は知らないかもしれないが、アンガウル州をめぐる怪しい動きは遅くても2004年頃からあるのだ。今回の選挙で６８票しか取れなかったKennosuke Suzukyが中国人マフィアと取引をしているという噂は色々なところから耳に入っていた。主権者は知っているのかもしれない。

And what Field reporters may not know is that the suspicious activity surrounding the state of Angaur has been around since 2004 at the latest. I heard rumors from various sources that Kennosuke Suzuky, who only got 68 votes in this election, was doing business with Chinese. The voters must have known about it.

Strange events in Palau. As reported in October, one of the republic’s islands, Angaur, is being developed by the United States military. They are spending $200 million on a radical “over the horizon radar” on the eight square kilometre island. It is aimed at China whose coast is 2500 kilometres away. As a result of World War Two Angaur has a long runway, recently repaired with US money.

Angaur’s controversial governor Kennosuke Suzuky meanwhile has had other ideas for the island: a casino with interesting Chinese backers. Pacific Newsroom has a list of 244 names, who Palau President Surangel S. Whipps declares as undesirable aliens. Most of them are linked to Angaur and Suzuky.

Palau has outlawed casino development for years, but Suzuky has made no secret of his contact with Macau gangster Wan Kuok-koi, aka “Broken Tooth” Koi, who has been developing casinos around the world. The US Treasury Department has forbidden from doing business with Wan.

Voters in Angaur plainly have not been impressed: Suzuky has been voted out this week. It probably means little as far as the radar development is concerned - but the Chinese casino is probably dead in the water.
